Harry Winks and Tanguy Ndombele scored late goals as Tottenham overcame a stubborn and spirited Wycombe side to progress to the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Wycombe, bottom of the Championship, had stunned their Premier League opponents when Fred Onyedinma slotted in the opener midway through the first half.

But Gareth Bale marked a rare start with the equaliser just before half-time, hooking in Lucas Moura’s cross.

Tottenham upped the pressure in the second half but Wycombe repelled numerous attacks as they looked set to take the game to extra time before Winks curled home to give Spurs the lead with minutes to go.

Ndombele ensured there would be no late drama when he finished from close range and then stabbed home a fourth in injury time to set Tottenham up with a fifth-round tie at Everton.

Spurs survive a scare

These two sides also met in the FA Cup fourth round back in 2017, when Spurs edged a thriller 4-3, and while Spurs’ margin of victory was bigger on this occasion, they were still made to work for it by their lower-league opponents.

Wycombe, who are bottom of the Championship and 10 points adrift of safety, had taken the lead in that game and they again stunned Spurs when Uche Ikpeazu got the better of Toby Alderweireld before cutting the ball back for Onyedinma to finish first time.

Although Bale equalised on the stroke of half-time with a smart finish, Wycombe frustrated Spurs in the second half and Jose Mourinho was sufficiently concerned by the home side’s resolve to send on Harry Kane just before the hour mark and then Son Heung-min a few minutes later.

As the game wore on, extra time looked increasingly likely but in the end Tottenham’s superior quality told as their late flurry ensured they progressed.
